Lorsan H Tablet is a fixed-dose combination of Losartan Potassium, an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB), and Hydrochlorothiazide, a thiazide diuretic. This combination is widely prescribed for the effective control of essential hypertension (high blood pressure), particularly in patients who require more than one agent to reach target blood pressure levels.
Losartan works by blocking the action of angiotensin II, a hormone that causes blood vessels to constrict. By preventing this action, it promotes relaxation of blood vessels, leading to reduced blood pressure. Hydrochlorothiazide complements this effect by increasing the excretion of sodium and water through the kidneys, thereby reducing fluid volume and contributing to further lowering of blood pressure.
Together, they provide a synergistic effect, making Lorsan H highly effective for moderate to severe hypertension and for patients not adequately controlled on monotherapy. This combination also helps in preventing long-term complications like stroke, heart attack, and kidney damage associated with unmanaged hypertension.
The dual mechanism of action makes Lorsan H especially beneficial for hypertensive patients who also have fluid retention or mild edema. It is usually administered once daily, and it can be taken with or without food.
Clinical use of this combination requires regular monitoring of blood pressure, electrolytes (especially potassium and sodium), kidney function, and hydration status. Overuse or unsupervised use can lead to electrolyte imbalance, dehydration, or renal issues.
Lorsan H is not intended for use during pregnancy and should be avoided in patients with severe kidney disease, gout, or known hypersensitivity to sulfonamide-derived drugs.
