Nifenorm 20 Tablet contains Nifedipine 20 mg SR, a calcium channel blocker (CCB) used to treat hypertension and angina pectoris. Nifedipine works by inhibiting the influx of calcium ions into vascular smooth muscle and cardiac muscle cells, resulting in relaxation of blood vessels and improved blood flow. The sustained-release (SR) formulation provides a gradual and prolonged effect, maintaining stable blood pressure control throughout the day while reducing the risk of sudden drops in blood pressure. Nifenorm 20 helps reduce the workload on the heart, lowers the risk of heart attack and stroke, and improves oxygen supply to the heart muscle in patients with angina. The 20 mg SR dose is commonly used as part of long-term therapy for hypertension or chronic stable angina, either as monotherapy or in combination with other antihypertensives.
Common side effects include headache, flushing, dizziness, fatigue, and mild swelling of the ankles (peripheral edema). Other possible effects include palpitations, nausea, or constipation. Rarely, it may cause hypotension, gingival hyperplasia (gum overgrowth), or an exaggerated heart rate increase. Most side effects are dose-related and tend to diminish with continued therapy or dose adjustment.
Nifenorm 20 Tablet is indicated for the management of essential hypertension and chronic stable angina pectoris. It may also be used in certain cases of vasospastic (Prinzmetal’s) angina and as an adjunct in hypertensive emergencies (under medical supervision).
Nifenorm 20 Tablet should be taken exactly as prescribed. Do not chew or crush the sustained-release tablet as it is designed for gradual drug release. It is contraindicated in patients with severe aortic stenosis, cardiogenic shock, or hypersensitivity to Nifedipine. Caution is advised in patients with heart failure, liver dysfunction, or low blood pressure. The medicine should not be stopped abruptly, as sudden withdrawal may worsen angina or cause a rebound increase in blood pressure. It is not recommended during pregnancy unless absolutely necessary and should be used with caution during breastfeeding. Avoid consuming grapefruit juice while taking Nifenorm, as it can interfere with the drug's metabolism and increase side effects.
Store Nifenorm 20 Tablet in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the medication at a temperature below 30°C and out of reach of children. Do not use the tablet beyond the expiry date printed on the packaging.
