Enalapril 2.5 mg Tablet is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor used for the management of high blood pressure and heart failure. It works by blocking the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II, a powerful vasoconstrictor, thereby relaxing blood vessels, reducing vascular resistance, and lowering blood pressure. Enalapril also decreases aldosterone secretion, which helps reduce sodium and water retention, lessening the workload on the heart. The 2.5 mg strength is generally used as a starting dose in patients with mild hypertension, in the elderly, or in individuals with kidney impairment who require a lower initial dose. Apart from lowering blood pressure, Enalapril provides cardioprotective and renoprotective benefits, helping reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and slowing the progression of chronic kidney disease, especially in diabetic patients.
Common side effects include dizziness, headache, fatigue, and a persistent dry cough (a class effect of ACE inhibitors). Some patients may experience low blood pressure (especially after the first dose), nausea, or gastrointestinal disturbances. Rare but serious adverse effects include hyperkalemia, angioedema (swelling of the face, lips, or throat), and impaired kidney function. Any signs of swelling or breathing difficulty require immediate medical attention.
Enalapril 2.5 mg Tablet is indicated for the management of essential hypertension, congestive heart failure, and to reduce the risk of mortality and morbidity in patients with symptomatic heart failure or asymptomatic left ventricular dysfunction. It is also used to slow the progression of kidney disease in patients with hypertension and diabetes.
Enalapril 2.5 mg should only be taken under medical supervision. It is contraindicated during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters, due to the risk of fetal harm. Caution is advised in patients with kidney dysfunction, bilateral renal artery stenosis, or a history of angioedema. Potassium supplements or potassium-sparing diuretics should not be used unless prescribed, as ACE inhibitors may increase potassium levels. Alcohol intake should be minimized as it can enhance the blood pressure-lowering effect. Do not discontinue therapy abruptly without consulting a physician. Regular monitoring of blood pressure, kidney function, and electrolytes is recommended during long-term use.
