Moxonidine 0.2 mg Tablet is a centrally acting antihypertensive medication from the imidazoline receptor agonist class. It selectively stimulates imidazoline I₁ receptors in the brainstem, reducing sympathetic nervous system activity, which results in lowered vascular resistance and blood pressure. Unlike older central antihypertensives such as clonidine, Moxonidine offers high blood pressure control with fewer sedative and anticholinergic effects due to its selectivity. The 0.2 mg strength is typically used as the starting dose for patients initiating therapy and can be titrated upwards based on response. Moxonidine is particularly useful in patients with metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, or type 2 diabetes, as it has minimal impact on glucose and lipid metabolism. It provides smooth 24-hour blood pressure control with once-daily dosing and is well tolerated as monotherapy or in combination with other antihypertensives.
Common side effects include dizziness, headache, fatigue, dry mouth, and mild drowsiness, particularly during the first few days of treatment. Some patients may experience gastrointestinal discomfort or insomnia. Rarely, bradycardia, significant hypotension, or allergic reactions can occur. Most side effects are transient and subside as the body adapts to the medication.
Moxonidine 0.2 mg Tablet is indicated for the management of essential hypertension in adults, especially in patients who are not controlled with or intolerant to conventional antihypertensive medications, or those with metabolic comorbidities.
Moxonidine 0.2 mg should only be taken under medical supervision. It is contraindicated in patients with severe bradycardia, sick sinus syndrome, heart block, or advanced heart failure unless prescribed by a specialist. Dose should be tapered gradually when discontinuing to avoid rebound hypertension. Caution is advised in patients with impaired renal function; dose adjustment may be necessary. The drug is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks. Alcohol should be limited as it can enhance drowsiness and the hypotensive effect. Regular blood pressure monitoring and follow-up are essential during treatment to ensure safety and efficacy.
Store Moxonidine 0.2 mg Tablet in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the tablets in their original blister packaging and out of reach of children. Do not use beyond the expiry date printed on the strip.
